How do I become a Foster Carer?
Becoming a foster carer is a rewarding journey and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. The process usually takes around 4 to 6 months, and while it’s thorough, it’s also straightforward and fully supported by our team.
You don’t need to know everything before you start, we’ll explain it all clearly once you apply.
Here’s a quick overview of what to expect:
Step 1: Initial Enquiry
Your journey begins by filling out a short Initial Interest Form. Once we receive it, we’ll arrange a visit to your home to chat with you about fostering, answer any questions, and explain what’s involved.
Step 2: Home Visit
One of our friendly social workers will visit your home to have a more in-depth conversation about:
-
What it means to be a foster carer
-
What the assessment process involves
-
What kind of support and training you’ll receive
Step 3: Preparation Training
You’ll take part in a three-day training course, designed to help you build the skills and knowledge needed to become a confident foster carer. You’ll learn about:
-
The role and responsibilities of a foster carer
-
Child protection and safeguarding
-
Behaviour management
-
How we all work together with schools, health professionals, and social services
-
The legal framework and how fostering works in the UK
This training is supportive, interactive, and provides a great chance to meet others on the same journey.
Step 4: Equality and Inclusion
At Quality Fostering, we welcome applications from all backgrounds. Everyone is treated with respect, regardless of age, ethnicity, marital status, sexual orientation, or disability. We also make sure that any meetings or assessments take place in a comfortable and accessible environment.
Step 5: Fostering Panel
Once your assessment is complete, you’ll be invited to meet our Fostering Panel– a group of experienced professionals who review your application. They’ll make a recommendation to our Decision Maker about whether to approve you as a foster carer.
Don’t worry, your social worker will support you throughout this step and attend with you.
Step 6: The Final Decision
Our Decision Maker carefully considers the panel’s recommendation and makes the final call. If approved, congratulations- you’re now a foster carer with Quality Fostering!
You’ll also attend a review panel once a year to ensure continued support and suitability for your fostering role.
