The application process


The process of becoming a carer normally takes anywhere from 4 to 6 months. Although this process is one that can take time it is very simple. If you are looking to become a carer then do not worry because we will take you through this step by step upon your application. Further down this page you will find information regarding the assessment process. It is not required for you to read this now but it may be useful to know before you apply. 

Initial Enquiry


When applying to become a Foster Carer you will be requested to fill in an Initial Interest Form. Quality Fostering will then make an appointment to visit you to provide more information about becoming a Foster Carer and the fostering career. At this time you will also be able to ask us any questions you may have.

Home Visit


During this visit, undertaken by a social worker, a detailed discussion will be undertaken covering:

  • The Foster Carer’s role and responsibilities
  • The Assessment Process

Preparation Training


Applicants will be supported through comprehensive preparation training in order to obtain the essential skills and knowledge needed. This three day course provides you with information regarding the Foster Carer’s role; the legal framework and the role of Quality Fostering, Social Services, behavior management, child protection, and the importance of multi agency working.

Equality of Access


All fostering applicants will be treated with equal respect and given equal consideration regardless of ethnic background, age, marital status, sexual orientation and disability. Quality Fostering will ensure the physical environment in which the assessment takes place is appropriate for all applicants.

Fostering Panel


Once the application is complete you will be invited to attend the Fostering Panel.  You will find the role and responsibility of Fostering Panel on ‘Fostering Panel’. The Fostering Panel will have all the information required make a Recommendation to our Decision Maker to Approve you as a Foster Carer with Quality Fostering.

Once you are a Foster Carer you will also need to attend panel annually to ensure your ongoing suitability for foster care.

The Decision


Quality Fostering’s Decision Maker considers the Recommendation from the Fostering Panel and makes the final Decision. If the Decision Maker agrees you will then become an approved Foster Carer for Quality Fostering.
